YouTube Go app launches in Nigeria.
YouTube has revealed that the YouTube Go app, which was previewed at the recent Google for Nigeria event, is now available for Nigerians to download, according to a report by All Africa. The app is available for download from theGoogle Play Store.
The app is designed to help users manage their data in such a way that they can control the amount of data usage while downloading or browsing online. The app was specifically designed for countries that fall into the emerging markets categories, Nigeria is one of these countries, according to a report by telecompaper.
The YouTube Go app, which is being launched 12 years after the original YouTube app was launched in May 2005, will provide a cost-effective alternative to the original app which has grown into the world's most popular online video community allowing billions of people to discover, watch and share video.
Speaking on the launch, the Vice President. Product Management at YouTube, Johanna Wright, said: "YouTube Go has been designed to take into account the challenges faced by YouTube users in countries like Nigeria, such as data cost and connectivity. With YouTube Go, we are making it possible for everyone in Nigeria to be able to discover videos that they love, regardless of their network status or data consumption preferences."
Wright highlighted the increase of Nigerians using their mobile devices to access the internet and that YouTube is trying to develop products that are tailored to Nigerians' specific needs.
"You can save videos for offline watching, and can choose what resolution video to save - basic quality or standard quality - giving you better control over how you use your precious data," he added.
The app is aimed at the online youth population and will offer the following:
