– Buratai promised to address killings in north-west in a few days

– He also stated that the army will stopped the attacks on oil and gas facilities in the south-south

Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, has promised that the Nigerian army will clear camps of Fulani herdsmen terrorizing the communities in few days.

Buratai said this during a courtesy call to Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state in Gusau on July 11.

According to him, the countless security challenges in the north-west would be mainly addressed by the end of the military’s training in Bakura forest of Zamfara this week.

He said: “The 2106 Nigerian Army Day Celebration is an extended celebration that fully incorporates real time security operations amidst our routine training. “While we celebrate, we will also address issues relating to insecurity in Zamfara state and parts of the North West in general.

“Though we are not just starting this operation, we have been on it and have recorded a number of successes against the bandits and cattle rustlers.

“I want to assure the people that at the end of our exercise this week, Zamfara state will be free of bandits and cattle rustlers.’’

The army chief added that the troops were also using the 2016 NADCEL to promote public confidence in the military through different programmes comrising medical outreaches and display of the army’s capabilities.

Mr. Buratai stated that the army’s firmness to rid the nation of criminals and divisive elements would widen to the south where abductors and pipeline vandals were operating.

“While we carry out this operation, we will also display our capability to assure Nigerians that the army belongs to them and they must trust the army to secure them.

“We will also go to the South-South in particular to clear out all the criminals that are operating there and others that are threatening to divide Nigeria,’’ he stated.

President Muhammadu Buhari has earlier accused the Niger Delta Avengers of vandalism and warned that the Federal government would deal with the group in the same way it is tackling Boko Haram in the country’s northeast.

However, later the president stated that his administration will negotiate with the militants.

Fulani herdsmen have carried out deadly attacks in Benue state recently, killing at least 81 people.
