Recession: While Nigerians suffer, Buhari, Osinbajo receive hardship allowance

A recent report of the salaries and emolument for public office holder in the executive arm shows that only President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice Yemi Osinbajo receive hardship allowance.

The report, an excerpt from the remuneration for public office holders as approved by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and compiled by the Economic Confidential, a financial magazine shows that President Buhari and vice president Osinbajo enjoys 50% of the annual basic salaries as hardship allowance.

A breakdown of the report shows that President Buhari receives an annual basic salary of N3.51m; Osinbajo receives N3.03m, while ministers, secretary to the government of the federation, head of service and chairmen of boards of statutory agencies go home with N2.02m annually.

This means, the president and his vice receives N1.75 million and N1.52 million as hardship allowance.

The report also shows that the duo receive 250% of the basic annual salary as constituency allowances; others allowances include: accommodation, furniture, domestic staff, personal assistants, utilities, newspapers, vehicle maintenance and fuelling, entertainment, maintenance, monitoring allowances and duty tour allowances.

The report also showed that the president, his vice and other officials in the executive arm of government have gulped a total of N2.29 billion in one year.

The report by Economic Confidential, a financial magazine the money spent on the executive officers salaries comes “at a time the Federal Government kick-started a national orientation campaign premised on the ‘Change Begins with me’”

Meanwhile other appointees including ministers, advisers, permanent secretaries and resident commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are entitled to 200% of their annual basic salary for accommodation; 300% for furniture; 75% for vehicle maintenance and fuel; 25% for personal assistant; 75% for domestic staff; 45% for entertainment; 30% for utilities; 15% for newspapers, and 20% for monitoring.

Also while the president Buhari’s and vice president Osinbajo’s travel allowances will be provided by the government other officials have their pegged at different rates.

Ministers, SGF, head of service and chairmen of board is $1000 per night on foreign trip while members of constitutional bodies get $900 per night, special adviser and speech writers will receive $800 per night and permanent secretaries, director generals and INEC electoral commissioner take $600 per night each on foreign trips.
